David Self
Can the man who drove a 1972 Ford Maverick called the “Mad Mav” be the same guy who was on the Dean’s List every semester and graduated summa cum laude from law school? You bet! David is also the guy who was meticulous enough to work as a structural engineer New York City with Maya Lin (designer of the Vietnam Memorial). Yet, he can’t seem to cook dinner without forgetting one step or ingredient.
Culinary debacles aside, David decided to give up engineering and become an attorney. And he is the kind of family lawyer who cares passionately about his clients. His colleagues call him patient and easy to work with – traits that family law clients especially appreciate. The competitive spirit he developed as an award-winning collegiate baseball player has also served him well and carries over to his case work.
David is a Charlotte native who received a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from prestigious Cornell University. When he decided to switch gears, he earned his J.D. from North Carolina Central University School of Law. While there, he was a member of three different trial teams and won a 3rd Place award in the closing argument competition. He was also a member of the North Carolina Central Law Journal.
David takes community involvement very seriously, too. He’s a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Auxiliary Lodge #9 in Charlotte, a committee member of the Mecklenburg County Bar Association Lawyer Referral Service, a former English-as-a-Second-Language tutor, and a former custody advocate with the Children’s Law Center (now the Council for Children’s Rights).
In his spare time, David enjoys mountain biking with his wife, Sara, and is a big fan of sports – college football, the NFL, and Cornell lacrosse and hockey. Otherwise, he likes walking his dog, Jade, in beautiful North Carolina and taking meditative, mindless runs on the treadmill. Oh, and he tries not to miss an episode of The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. It’s his favorite.
