When I first visited Valle Crucis it was in the fall. There was a feeling of comfort and warmth there that I can’t describe. When I returned to the studio I worked out my ideas in smaller studies. I chose colors that symbolized the feelings that had come to me there. When I felt that I had sufficiently processed all the elements that symbolized the area I went to work on a larger piece. I did some meditation taking myself back to the place and the essence of the feelings that I had there and when I started drawing I just let all of it come out without any rationalizations except for the balance of abstract forms into a harmony.

Star Night Earth Mother – Oil pastel drawing on board

Mother Earth and the Starry Night are two themes that I continually repeat in my work. In this piece I have combined the two themes placing them in contrast to each other. The effect is a high-pitched color composition, which both soothes and warms the spirit. The water is the symbolic element that connects the two realms.

Uncompahgre – Silkscreen monotype embellishment with oil pastel crayon

While working on this piece my mind was traveling back to the Uncompahgre in Colorado. The area is a rich and fertile river valley that lies about 5,000 feet above sea level. The San Juan Mountains rise more than twice as high above the valley and shelter it on one end. It was the favorite hunting ground of the Ute Indians and they named the area Uncompahgre which means not always a friend. The long broad mesas and the colored rock rise up along the river, which runs a fast clean pace out of the high country. The area abounds with hot springs and has a spiritual energy that rejuvenates the soul.
