Subsrcibing to an RSS feed: The Basics

What is RSS?
RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication. It allows for you to keep track of all of your favorite websites without having to visit each site individually. An RSS feed notifies you when content has been added to one of your favorite websites (news, videos, podcasts, blogs); new content literally comes to you. The new content is delivered in the form of notifications. These notifications will consist of a headline and synopsis of the new content, as well as a link to the website that the content is from.

What type of content is included in an RSS feed?
RSS feeds can include any kind of content: html, pdf, pictures, videos, etc. If you can link to the content on the web, then it will work with RSS.

How do I know if one of my favorite websites supports RSS feed?
If a website supports RSS feed it will contain a "feed button." Feed buttons typically look like this:

The most common feed button looks like this:

How can I start using RSS feeds?
In order to subscribe to an RSS feed you need a feed reader. A feed reader is a simple application that keeps track of all the feeds that you want to monitor. The feed reader visits each site for you, and gathers the latest updates. There are many types of different feed readers. Perhaps the most popular feed reader is GoogleReader. This reader is especially convenient if Google is set as the homepage on your browser.

Basic feed readers are also built in to several email applications (Gmail, Outlook) and internet browsers (Internet Explorer7, Safari).

Free RSS Feed Readers
Here are links to some recommended free RSS feed readers:
