Brian, Life Story

Brian and his ex-wife met in college and moved to the Raleigh area where they married and had a daughter. After several years, his ex told him that the chemistry was no longer there.

“At that time, I didn’t really know what chemistry was, I wasn’t really aware of the chemistry thing.  I was in a marriage that was sort of – I was in a rut.”

Like many people facing a divorce, Brian’s biggest concerns were his uncertainty about what would happen during the separation process, and his anxiety over the big change that was about to happen in his life.

“I didn’t really know what to expect.  Going through the whole experience of a separation, first of all, knowing what that was – I didn’t know what that was, I didn’t know what all that entailed.  You’re happy with your life as it was, and all of a sudden, it’s about to change.”

Fortunately, Brian and his ex-wife remained amicable throughout the process and were able to handle everything without going to court. More importantly, they both put the well-being of their daughter above everything else that was involved in their separation.

“My ex and I both love our child to death – we want her to be a part of both our lives.  I have her 5 days in a row and then my ex has her five days in a row and we kind of rotate weekends.  It’s a schedule to juggle, and you have to get used to it, but I’ve been doing it now for about 3 years.”

Having now been done with the process for some time, Brian is optimistic about the future and can look back at the progress that he’s made and how much things have improved from when he first began his journey.

“Having to start off on my own was probably the hardest thing I had to do… Even if you feel like you’re at the lowest point in your life, tomorrow is another day and it does get better… I used to be a very negative person, and I’ve flip-flopped that role now.”
